Art therapy is a creative counselling approach that invites the creative arts into the conversation to shed new light and understanding on a situation
Making art about our reality can be really helpful because it puts aspects of our lives, issues, hopes and concerns "out there" to look at and engage with in new and helpful ways.
Because art therapy uses more than words, it can make a real difference to how you approach life, and the different emotions you experience.
The very process of making art can also be a wonderful support for our mental wellbeing. Through art making we stimulate our minds and senses in meaningful and positive ways, helping us to feel focused calm and engaged with life.
Art therapy is a powerful tool towards hope.
Hope art therapy sessions are flexible, and relational...
Because each session is focused around you and your needs what a session looks like can vary, however we would generally start with a time of checking in, to talk about what has been happening for you and what you might want to explore.
We will then use different creative arts materials and practices to continue the conversation. This might include drawing, painting, making objects, sculpting with clay, making a story in sand, or using other natural materials. Or you could simply use words, gesture and movement.
It is more about process than results.
The different materials can help you find a voice to express something more clearly, to understand more deeply, to find a new perspective.
Art therapy is a relational process, you will have a companion to look at things together with, you will be supported to set goals and direction of your inquiry.
The therapist works with all ages and will adjust the sessions appropriately. Group, couple and family sessions are also available.
Short answer: no.
Long answer: Because each art therapy session is more about the process than the end product, the goal is not to produce a nice artwork that you can take home with you, but rather to discover understanding about yourself that you can carry with you on your own journey towards healing and wholeness.
It doesn't matter what level of artistic skill you have - the main thing is to be open and present to the moment.
With support, you will find a way of expressing yourself that is unique, and uniquely helpful to you and your life situation.
You might also find that you enjoy and want to keep the art you make along the way as a reminder of your learning and experience.
